Dusty Robotics
Mountain View, CA
QA Tester Hardware/Software
Full-time

Who We Are:

Dusty Robotics develops robot-powered tools for the modern construction workforce.

While today's buildings are built predominantly with manual labor, Dusty envisions a future in which skilled labor makes use of robotic automation to make the work safer, more efficient, and more precise. We want to create a future in which construction workers don't need to retire early because their bodies give out. In Dusty's future, the buildings we live and work in are built by teams of creative and problem-solving construction crews who direct robots to do the dull/dirty/dangerous work.

What We're Building:

Dusty bridges the gap between the digital world of building design with the skilled labor operating in the field, accelerating the digital transformation of the construction industry. The centerpiece of our strategy is the FieldPrinter: a mobile printer-on-wheels that prints building floorplans full-size on the concrete floor of a construction site. When errors in layout can cause multi-million-dollar mistakes, our product ensures that all field crews are building off of a single source of truth derived from the digital model.

About Dusty

We believe in a future where robots are standard tools critical for constructing buildings efficiently. In this future, robots leverage CAD design models to make the workforce more productive and eliminate errors that create waste and rebuilding of work that has already been completed. In a Dusty-powered future, space becomes more affordable and requires fewer resources to produce.

We bridge the gap between the digital world of building design with the skilled labor operating in the field, accelerating the digital transformation of the construction industry. The centerpiece of our strategy is the FieldPrinter: a mobile printer-on-wheels that prints building floorplans (in CAD format) full-size on the concrete floor of a construction site. Our robot prints lines, text, and points with 1 mm accuracy, enabling builders to construct walls and fixtures on top of our layout with zero mistakes:

The position

We are looking for a QA Lead to structure and coordinate all testing efforts in our product development process. In this role, you'll be a senior member of the engineering team alongside our hardware and software engineers. We believe in QA being part of the engineering team, not separate from it.

The role covers three main responsibilities:

  • Making sure both new and existing product functions perform as expected before each software and hardware release
  • Making sure the product never strays from its safety and performance requirements
  • Developing repeatable test processes that surface issues early and often during development

This is a hands-on role that involves testing both the software interface and robot hardware as a whole product. Initially, you'll be the only QA engineer and will perform active testing of new product releases in our lab and in the field at construction sites. You'll also work closely with our field operations team to capture and track product issues that arise as they run the robot on job sites.

At the same time, you'll begin to set up robust and repeatable testing processes for the engineering team, designed to catch issues early and often in the product development cycle. This should include test plans, test environments, component-level tests, automation and reporting tools that allow anyone on the team to step in and create new tests or run regression tests within the framework you create. The testing regime that you establish should scale well as we grow the engineering team.

Who you are

  • Experienced organizing and leading a QA process for a shipping hardware product with software interfaces (IoT / devices)
  • 5+ years of hands-on testing experience
  • Excellent planning, communication and observational skills
  • A fertile imagination for generating test scenarios
  • Some experience with test automation tools and scripting (Python, Selenium)
  • BS degree in a STEM field or equivalent experience
