Avionics Software Senior Manager – Advanced Development Programs

As a Senior Manager for Advanced Technology avionics software, you will report to the Manager of the Avionics Design Section for the Advanced Development Programs business group. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of software development for various programs. This is both an individual contributor and people manager position.  You will use your technical background to understand and effectively hire and guide world class talent to support Blue Origin’s projects.


As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers in Blue Origin’s Advanced Development Program (ADP), you will directly manage a Capabilities team of 5 to 15 subject matter experts. You will provide the people, processes, and tools essential for best-in-class performance in the respective subject domain, while also serving as a technical contributor in your area of expertise, providing technical support directly onto one or more product teams.  Your scope results in the delivery of safe, reliable, ready to install hardware that meets requirements and acceptance criteria.


You will lead the Group by managing the Group’s labor and non-labor budget for Design Engineering activities, setting, and prioritizing Group goals, and developing and maintaining team performance metrics. Your direct reports will be meeting the day to day demands of project and program managers, and you will negotiate statements of work, time commitments, support recruiting and hiring efforts to grow your team. You will coordinate and integrate with similar capability groups and expertise across the company, and coordinate access to key technical resources, software, models, and analysis tools needed to develop and capture best practices within your Group.

Responsibilities:


  • Supply people, processes, and tools needed to meet the demand signals specified by project and program managers. Negotiate Statements of Work with the respective product managers.
  • Supply group staff to projects, reconciling project needs with staff capabilities and negotiating time commitments
  • When demand signal exceeds group capabilities or capacity, work with Section Director to recruit additional staff or secure contract labor as needed
  • Manage your direct reports’ professional development (e.g., hiring, performance reviews, compensation and promotion management, routine one-on-one development conversations) and coach them on performance.
  • Ensure staff are properly trained, including to operate within the Blue Origin safety culture
  • Obtain performance feedback for employees from the product managers they have worked for in the evaluation period
  • Proactively counsel your employees’ career growth, by understanding their unique goals, capabilities, and experience and matching against current and future needs.
  • Facilitate development opportunities for your employees to align with ADP product needs, advance the capabilities of the Group’s community of practice, and increase employee satisfaction.
  • Organize and equip the Group and assure that its staff are trained:
  • Set and prioritize Group goals
  • Coordinate access to key technical resources (e.g., standards, journals, references)
  • Develop, maintain, and implement a plan for acquiring software, models, and analysis tools needed, and processes for capturing staff best practices
  • Develop and maintain team performance metrics
  • Coordinate and integrate with like capability groups and expertise across the company
  • Build relationships with universities and other external stakeholders in the domain area, for bench-marking, recruiting pipeline, and collaboration purposes
  • Perform technical work and provide technical leadership of the highest caliber:
  • Add senior technical value directly to ADP projects
  • Exemplify conduct for your Group’s members
  • Remain cognizant of practical issues encountered by your Group members in their work
  • Continue honing your technical acumen and depth in your field of expertise.
  • Embody, promote, and coach the Blue Origin leadership principles and ADP culture.


Qualifications:


  • B.S. degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years software people management skills
  • 7+ years flight software development
  • Demonstrated software development skills in real-time embedded systems, particularly in C/C++
  • Demonstrated experience in defining and/or verifying low-level software structure, inter process communication, and scheduling
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary development projects, including managing requirements, priorities, scope, schedule, and cost
  • Experience in build automation, continuous integration, configuration management, verification, deployment of software
  • Excellent written, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:


  • Self-starter, strong bias for action
  • Experience with aerospace vehicle development
  • Experience managing subcontracts
  • Experience in full life cycle software development of real-time embedded system, including system design and analysis, requirement capture and development, software implementation and verification, system integration, qualification, and releasing.
  • Experience with Safety Critical software development guidelines such as DO-178C or NASA 7150.2C
  • Experience with verification, integration, and test, of orbital launch vehicles or human rated spacecraft
